MLGW maintenance work involving mercaptan
August 25, 2019
The public may smell rotten eggs/sulfur due to natural gas odorant???

MLGW will perform maintenance at its Gas Gate Station near Weaver Road south of Holmes Road today. Work began this morning and will last until 5 p.m.

The public in the surrounding areas may smell the mercaptan in the air. Mercaptan is the chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.

Depending on the wind/weather conditions, residents and businesses in various areas could smell this strong, sulfuric odor. There is no cause for concern.

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 431,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
