Get Paid to Reduce Energy Use with the TVA-EnerNOC Demand Response Program

The TVA-EnerNOC Demand Response Program, in partnership with MLGW, is a no-risk opportunity for commercial, institutional, and industrial customers of local power distributors in the TVA service territory to earn money and drive energy savings through demand response (DR). Your participation helps support the reliability of the regional electric grid and helps maintain affordable electricity across the Tennessee Valley region—plus, you get paid to participate!

How Does It Work?
Program participants receive recurring payments in return for agreeing to reduce electricity consumption in response to abnormally high electricity demand. There is no cost to participate, but you must be able to reduce significant electric load (ideally, at least 100 kW).

In addition, when demand response events occur, you get additional payments based on your facility’s actual demand reduction during the event.

EnerNOC manages your participation from start to finish, ensuring you receive the highest possible financial rewards. As part of participation, you’ll also receive access to your facility’s energy data through DemandSMART, EnerNOC’s comprehensive web-based DR application.

What Are The Benefits?
Maximize Payments To Your Bottom Line.  EnerNOC has helped thousands of customers maximize the financial benefits of demand response and has provided tens of millions of dollars in payments to organizations like yours since 2003.

Reduce Energy Costs Today.  DemandSMART™ provides the transparency you need to make better energy decisions by providing on-demand access to the real-time energy information you need to better manage your energy costs.

Support Your Community.  Your participation helps maintain affordable electricity across the region and provides a clean, cost-effective alternative to TVA building new power plants or buying expensive supplemental power from other suppliers when system demand is high.  These voluntary actions reduce the risk of power supply problems that could result in blackouts and brownouts.

How Do I Participate?
EnerNOC makes participation easy. We take care of the complex details so you can stay focused on running your business. Our expert team will identify your energy reduction potential and work with you to create an enrollment strategy that delivers maximum value with the minimum impact on your operations. We outline these measures in a detailed energy reduction plan for you and your facility management staff. We install necessary metering devices at your facility to establish communication with our Network Operations Center (NOC), so we can monitor your energy consumption levels in real time, 24/7. EnerNOC simulates a DR event to ensure that you are comfortable with your energy reduction plan. At any time during an event, you can log into my.enernoc. com to view your performance in real time.  Your site is then enrolled and ready to respond if and when an event is dispatched. Throughout the process, EnerNOC handles enrollment, measurement, verification, and payments on your behalf.

When Can Demand Response Events  Occur?

Program Period:  Year-round

Program Hours:
April – October, 12:00PM – 8:00PM CT, weekdays
November – March, 5:00AM – 1:00PM CT, weekdays
Event Notification:  30 minutes

What Can I Expect During An Event?

  1. Notification.  When TVA anticipates the need for support, it dispatches the EnerNOC network into action. EnerNOC will then send you a notification via email, phone, or pager informing you that the event will begin.

  2. Response.  At the start of the event, your facility will reduce its electricity usage according to your pre-determined energy reduction plan — either on your own, or automatically through the NOC.  You can use the DemandSMART web application to track your status.

  3. Support.  Before, during, and after an event, the NOC remains in communication with your facility. Our staff is available 24/7/365, supporting you to ensure that you achieve the highest possible levels of performance and payments.

What Types Of Reductions Can I Make?
EnerNOC has extensive experience creating reduction strategies that work within the operational limitations of a wide variety of unique facilities, including food processing and storage, manufacturing, schools and universities, municipalities, commercial property, and more. Common examples include:

  • Lighting
  • Manufacturing processes
  • HVAC equipment
  • Chiller load
  • Pumps
  • Industrial Freezers

Participants find that many energy-intensive processes can simply be shifted by a few hours to facilitate event participation. Overhead lighting can be reduced and thermostat settings changed to provide reductions for office, education and retail operations.  Ask us about our experience working with customers like you.

Are Other Businesses And Organizations Participating?
Absolutely!  In fact, MLGW customers represent the largest group in the program, totaling more than 25 MW of demand response capabilities.  (MLGW has several of its office facilities enrolled.)  Since the program launched locally in 2008, MLGW participants collectively have earned more than $1 million in incentives!
